چکیده

Music21 is an object-oriented toolkit for analyzing, searching, and transforming music in symbolic (scorebased) forms. The modular approach of the project allows musicians and researchers to write simple scripts rapidly and reuse them in other projects. The toolkit aims to provide powerful software tools integrated with sophisticated musical knowledge to both musicians with little programming experience (especially musicologists) and to programmers with only modest music theory skills. This paper introduces the music21 system, demonstrating how to use it and the types of problems it is wellsuited toward advancing. We include numerous examples of its power and flexibility, including demonstrations of graphing data and generating annotated musical scores.

Feature Extraction and Machine Learning on Symbolic Music using the music21 Toolkit

Machine learning and artificial intelligence have great potential to help researchers understand and classify musical scores and other symbolic musical data, but the difficulty of preparing and extracting characteristics (features) from symbolic scores has hindered musicologists (and others who examine scores closely) from using these techniques. This paper describes the “feature” capabilities ...

Interoperable Digital Musicology Research via music21 Web Applications

Digital humanities practices applied to musical scores have the potential to open up vast new datasets and avenues for research in musicology and are beginning to transform the field of musical research. Yet beyond the common difficulties of all digital humanities projects, significant problems arise in digital musicology that are unique to the structure of musical scores and the lack of availa...

Towards Pedagogability of Mathematical Music Theory: Algebraic Models and Tiling Problems in computer-aided composition

The paper aims at clarifying the pedagogical relevance of an algebraic-oriented perspective in the foundation of a structural and formalized approach in contemporary computational musicology. After briefly discussing the historical emergence of the concept of algebraic structure in systematic musicology, we present some pedagogical aspects of our MathTools environment within OpenMusic graphical...

Computer-aided Transformational Analysis with Tone Sieves

Sieve-theoretical methods are one of the first historical examples of theoretical tools whose implementational character has largely contributed to the development of computational musicology. According to Xenakis’ original intuition, we distinguish between elementary transformations of sieves and compound ones. This makes sense if the sieve construction is considered as part of the musical mea...

Of Music, Mind, and Machines: Towards an Integrative Musicology

Music has always been a particular aspect of human culture. It is the first art form that deals directly with timehow it is shaped through vibrations and how these vibrations are organized. Numerous theories have been developed to understand how the organization of sounds intimately works, each proposing interesting views on music, albeit very diverse and apparently difficult to conciliate. How...
